A visit from a night heron

Vetwest Whitfords recently received a phone call from AQWA asking if we could see an injured water bird. Always up for a challenge we were keen to meet our new patient. When the bird arrived, a night heron, we could see his dilemma. He had a fishing line hanging from his beak. Our first step was to take some radiographs of the heron's abdomen, which revealed a barbed fishing hook lodged in his stomach!

The story of Marlena the kangaroo

Marlena is a much loved soft release kangaroo, looked after by the Davenport family on their farm property. She is a star patient at Vetwest Clarkson. Originally rescued by a veterinarian who no longer could look after her, the Davenport family adopted her several years ago. She lives on their property with several other kangaroos.

Slippery Carlos visits Currambine

It's not often we get a visit from a slippery kind like Carlos the Carpet Python. Carlos had been off his food and his owner decided to bring him to Vetwest Currambine for an examination. Most of Carlos' problems were due to the environment in which he was being kept (also known as husbandry). Although exotic and unusual pets are becoming more popular they can be quite difficult pets to look after properly, with most of their medical problems being due to poor husbandry.

Gonzo the bird lost and found again

On Christmas Eve, a member of the public brought a white bird with a nasty looking beak into Vetwest Yokine. A health check by the vet showed we had a lovely, friendly long-billed Corella that was suffering from starvation. He was very thin and in need of a wash.

Ned the Kangaroo undergoes Orthopaedic surgery

Ned the Red Kangaroo came to see us recently after being rescued by a carer. Ned had a suspected broken leg which was confirmed after taking x-rays . With the options being surgery or humane euthanasia, Dr Wayne from our Whitfords hospital took on the task of repairing Ned's fractured leg using plates and screws during orthopaedic surgery. Ned is now full of life, and hopping around his care enclosure.

Donating blood leads to a wonderful new life for Snowbell the rabbit

Recently we had a female rabbit named "Annabelle" come to us in a serious condition. She had just given birth and unfortunately suffered a severe uterine haemorrhage. This is not an uncommon problem in rabbits. The haemorrhage was so severe that we were greatly concerned for Annabelle's life. She needed an urgent blood transfusion.
