The American Staffordshire Terrier was originally developed as a working dog by American farmers in the early 1800’s. They were first used for general farm work, hunting, companionship and as homestead guardians. Although there were instances of the breed being used as a fighting dog during the early years of development, selective breeding since the 1930’s has lead away from the fighting heritage.
Appearance and Temperament
The American Staffy is a well muscled strong yet agile dog. They are generally a happy and outgoing dog with a confident and stable temperament. They make a loving, affectionate and loyal family pet. Their extreme attentiveness makes them easily trainable wanting nothing more than to please their owner.
Early socialisation is recommended as some un-socialised American Staffys can be aggressive towards other dogs and cats, rabbits and other household pets. A properly trained and socialised dog will make a great family companion.

Grooming
A low maintenance breed with very short hair, the American Staffy requires very minimal grooming. A rub of their coat is all they need to keep their coat nice and shiny.
