Known as the world's smallest dog, the origin of the Chihuahua remains a mystery but it has been said they are a very ancient breed. It was not until the late 19th century that the breed was discovered in the Mexico state of Chihuahua and so it was officially named after it. There are two types of Chihuahua - the Smooth Coat and the Long Coat. The Smooth Coat Chihuahua features a soft, glossy coat while the Long Coat Chihuahua has a long flat or slightly wavy coat with a long, full tail.

Don't be fooled by their size, the Chihuahua is a "big dog" in a small body and will refuse to be intimidated by larger dogs. The alert nature of the Chihuahua makes them wonderful household watchdogs. They are devoted to their owners but may be nervous around strangers and young children. Overall the Chihuahua is a graceful, alert, swift moving little dog with a saucy expression, and is best suited to older adults and older children provided they do not use any rough-house tactics.

Grooming and care
The Chihuahua is a very clean and generally odour free companion. Their toenails tend to grow quickly so a trim regularly will help them avoid slipping on hard surfaces. The Smooth Coat Chihuahua requires minimal care while the Long Coat Chihuahua will require a good brushing once or twice a week to keep their coat tangle and debris free.
Due to their size, the Chihuahua is a fantastic indoor dog. Being active little dogs they love nothing more than a daily outdoor walk and to join you on an outing.
