With the growing popularity of canine fashion, we are often asked, does my dog need something warm to wear in winter?

Well the answer depends entirely on your pet’s breed, health and lifestyle. For some, a warm coat will make for a much more comfortable and bearable winter. Yet for most dogs particularly those located in the metropolitan areas of Australia, they can quite happily enjoy winter and their daily exercise without a jumper as long as they have access to shelter including complete protection from the wind and rain.

Of course there are exceptions. Dogs who have difficulty retaining heat due to their natural body shape and short hair, such as Whippets and Italian Greyhounds and particularly those housed outside will certainly benefit from winter apparel. So too will senior dogs suffering from chronic illnesses including arthritis.

Deciding on whether your pet needs a fashion accessory comes down to common sense and your pet’s individual living conditions and situation. If you would like more information, don’t hesitate to contact one of our pet healthcare team members who will be more than happy to assess your pet’s situation and make a recommendation.
